Two European Protection Levels
At the broadest level, Spanish geographical wine names are registered as DOP or IGP under European quality schemes. Each protected name has a defined area and product specification.
Traditional Terms on Spanish Labels
- DOCa: Denominación de Origen Calificada.
- DO: Denominación de Origen.
- VP: Vino de Pago.
- VC: Vino de Calidad.
- VT: Vino de la Tierra.
Classification Is Not a Universal Score
Protected origin communicates place and rules, not a single ranking of taste. Excellent wines can appear at different levels, and individual producers still make decisive choices about farming, blending, maturation and style.
